ToveJansson(1914–2001)wasborninHelsinkiintoFinland’sSwedish-speakingminority.Herfatherwasasculptorandhermotheragraphicdesignerandillustrator.Winterswerespentinthefamily’sart-filledstudioandsummersinafisherman’scottageontheshoreoftheGulfofFinland,asettingthatwouldlaterfigureinJansson’swritingforadultsandchildren.Janssonlovedbooksasachildandsetoutfromanearlyagetobeanartist.Herfirstillustrationwaspublishedwhenshewasfifteenyearsold;fouryearslaterapicturebookappearedunderapseudonym.AfterattendingartschoolsinbothStockholmandParis,shereturnedtoHelsinki,whereinthe1940sand’50sshewonacclaimforherpaintingsandmurals.From1929until1953Janssondrewhumorousillustrationsandpoliticalcartoonsfortheleft-leaninganti-FascistFinnish-SwedishmagazineGarm,anditwastherethatwhatwastobecomeJansson’smostfamouscreation,Moomintroll,ahippopotamus-likecharacterwithadreamydisposition,madehisfirstappearance.JanssonwentontowriteabouttheadventuresofMoomintroll,theMoominfamily,andtheircuriousfriendsinalong-runningcomicstripandinaseriesofbooksforchildrenthathavebeentranslatedthroughouttheworld,inspiringfilms,severaltelevisionseries,anopera,andthemeparksinFinlandandJapan.Janssonalsowroteelevennovelsandshortstorycollectionsforadults,includingTheSummerBookandTheTrueDeceiver(bothavailableasNYRBClassics).In1994shewasawardedthePrizeoftheSwedishAcademy.Janssonandhercompanion,theartistTuulikkiPietilä,continuedtolivepart-timeinacottageontheremoteouteredgeoftheFinnisharchipelagountil1991.

AliSmithistheauthorofsevenworksoffiction,includingthenovelHotelWorld,whichwasshort-listedfortheBookerPrizein2001,andTheAccidental,whichwontheWhitbreadAwardin2005andwasshort-listedforthe2005ManBookerPrize.
